Hyundai Construction Equipment North America has announced the immediate North American availability of three new models in its HX-A series of compact hydraulic excavators. The Hyundai HX35AZ, HX40A and HX48AZ excavators were initially unveiled at CONEXPO-CON/AGG 2023 earlier this year.
“The Utility Expo provides the perfect venue for announcing that these three new compact excavators are now available from Hyundai dealers across the United States and Canada,” said Jeff Pate, VP of compact equipment sales, HD Hyundai Construction Equipment North America.
“Utility contractors – and others – can see firsthand why we are calling these Hyundai machines ‘the new standard in compact excavators.’ Productivity-driving features, such as automatic blade float, hydraulic quick coupler, built-in lifting hook, and guards for boom, arm and bucket hydraulics come standard on these new machines. These three models build on Hyundai’s decades-long history of leadership in compact excavator design, engineering and manufacturing.”

Compact Excavator Features
All three new models feature low-emission engines that are Tier 4 Final compliant. The Hyundai HX35AZ excavator is powered by a Kubota D1703 diesel engine with a net power rating of 24.8 hp (18.2 kW), while the HX40A and HX48AZ feature Yanmar 4TNV88C engines, rated at 37.4 hp (27.5 kW).
The HX35AZ has an operating weight of 8,300 lbs. (3,765 kg), dig depth of 9 ft., 8 in. (2.95 m) and bucket breakout force of 7,081 lbs. (3,212 kg). The HX40A has an operating weight of 9,479 lbs. (4,300 kg), dig depth of 11 ft., 2 in. (3.4 m) and bucket breakout force of 9,846 lbs. (4,466 kg). The HX48AZ has an operating weight of 10,912 lbs. (4,950 kg), dig depth of 11 ft., 5 in. (3.5 m) and bucket breakout force of 8,223 lbs. (3,730 kg).
All three models come with five years’ free use of Hi MATE, Hyundai’s proprietary remote management system that allows 24/7 global tracking and monitoring of engine, hydraulics, electrical systems and other components to facilitate preventive maintenance.
IRONPROS Perspective
With compact excavators in high demand, Hyundai is positioning itself to capture this market with the release of the new HX-A models.
“The compact excavator industry closed off 2022 with 76,189 units, which is 2 percent market growth from 2021, and we expect to have 3 percent growth in 2023 as inventory levels replenish,” said Thomas Lee, director of product management at DEVELON. “Agriculture, ground maintenance and utilities activity are also showing growth along with inventory growth. We’re expecting growth in the 6- to 10-metric-ton segment whereas the smaller 3- to 5-metric-ton segment will likely decline due to high interest rates which will persist through 2023 and into 2024.”
These units are more versatile than conventional excavators, enabling a wide range of custom features from the manufacturer or aftermarket OEMs to meet jobsite or project requirements. Such benefits translate to overall better performance in tight spaces, including residential areas and public locations, where the work environment has very specific needs.
