Cheng Concrete opens training facility in Atlanta

In response to increasing demand for concrete countertop education, the Cheng Concrete Training Academy will open the Cheng Center of Excellence in Atlanta. The center will be headed by Cheng-certified artisan David Akers of Amelia Concrete Fusion and offer curriculum developed by Fu-Tung Cheng.

Concrete Polishing and Processing Technical Institute announced

The Board of Directors of the Concrete Polishing and Processing Technical Institute announced the introduction of the Institute as a means to bring unbiased accreditation to the industry. Four levels of accreditation are offered and classes will be held at the Institute’s Stevensville, Md. facilities. For more information visit www.cptinstitute.org.

Pervious concrete report released

The RMC Research & Education Foundation has released its study “Portland Cement Pervious Concrete Pavement: Field Performance Investigation on Parking Lot and Roadway Pavements.” It includes a long-term field performance investigation on the use of pervious concrete, particularly in areas where freeze-thaw conditions are prevalent. This new study validates that pervious concrete has performed well in freeze-thaw environments, with little maintenance required. Download the full report at www.rmc-foundation.org.

ACI’s online Concrete Knowledge Center

The American Concrete Institute’s new Concrete Knowledge Center is an online resource where concrete industry professionals can find discussions of concrete-related techniques, answers to commonly asked questions and case studies. Construction professionals gather to discuss national issues

Specialty construction professionals from around the country will assemble May 19-20 in Washington D.C. for a legislative conference to discuss this year’s most significant congressional and public policy issues impacting the union construction industry.

The National Issues Conference will include discussions on dozens of topics, including presidential candidates’ health care plans and presentations on labor and employment law.

Report finds no lead-based paint concerns in recycling concrete

With an estimated 100 million tons of concrete generated in demolition projects being recycled each year in the United States - with a relatively small percentage of it containing lead-based paint (LBP) - questions were raised regarding its suitability for reuse. A study conducted under the aegis of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has found that there is no environmental or health risk to workers involved in the crushing and recycling of concrete containing LBP as long as they follow certain lead compliance work protocols. ASCC announces availability of “A Guide to Selecting a Concrete Contractor”

The American Society of Concrete Contractors (ASCC) has prepared “A Guide to Selecting a Concrete Contractor,” available to ASCC members only at no charge. The piece was designed to be most useful to contractors dealing with residential customers or small business owners.

The brochure explains that contractor selection should be based on more than price alone. It provides a checklist of items such as references, drawings, safety practices, insurance coverage, years in business, etc., that allows an owner to compare one contractor to another.
