Backhoe-loaders continue to be a dominant force on many jobsites.
These versatile units offer the value of two machines in one — with a highly capable loader on one end and an efficient excavating tool on the other. And their ability to accommodate a wide spectrum of attachments makes them one of the most flexible and indispensable tools in many rental fleets. Following is a look at available backhoe-loader models, both small and large.
Allmand Bros. Inc.
The Allmand compact tractor-loader-backhoe line includes diesel- and gasoline-powered models ranging from 20 to 40 hp.
The ELS backhoe design features oversized polished pins with replaceable composite bearings and urethane lip seals in all working joints. The industrial-class backhoes provide digging forces up to 6,000 lbs. Dual-cylinder, 180-degree hydraulic cushioned swing allows precise backhoe work in tight areas.
JCB's Precision Control system is available on the 214, 214S, 215 and 215S backhoe-loader models. This hydraulic over hydraulic servo-control system incorporates the same technology found on JCB excavators. Located in the armrest, the Precision Controls can be activated by simply locking the seat into the rear position, or engaging the backhoe mode switch from any non-rear-facing position for full 180-degree performance.
Caterpillar introduces its E-Series backhoe-loaders, which replace the D-Series models, that deliver increased performance, enhanced operator comfort and improved controllability. The new cab on these machines features curved glass and contoured fenders for improved serviceability and superior visibility. New Cat axles and a modified transmission increase top travel speeds 25 percent to 25 mph. Factory-installed thumbs are available in both hydraulic and stiff-link versions.
The 710G backhoe is powered by a 118-net-hp John Deere 6068T six-cylinder, Tier II diesel engine. The backhoe end delivers a 17,000-lb. Power Dig force with a maximum digging depth of 17 ft. 10 in. The loader provides 14,800 lbs. of breakout force with an 8,693-lb. lift capacity at full height. Features include pressure-compensating, load-sensing hydraulics, a 69-gal. fuel tank and a variety of tools and attachments.
The T5C has a sloped hood for improved visibility; redesigned fenders and relocated parking brake handle for better access to the engine compartment; and a heavy-duty plate-steel front grill.
A landscape-style bucket is standard. The T7 features a 26-hp Kubota diesel engine, while the two- or four-wheel-drive T9 has a 32.8-hp Kubota turbo diesel. Both the T7 and T9 provide 180-degree backhoe swing.
Volvo Construction Equipment
The Volvo BL70 is a "contractor-type/high-spec" machine equipped with standard four-wheel drive and cab. It is powered by a 90-hp Volvo turbocharged engine and incorporates a powershift transmission and load-sensing, flow-sharing hydraulics. The loader has a pilot-controlled joystick, while the backhoe is mechanically controlled with levers. The entry-level Volvo BL60 features standard two-wheel drive and canopy.
Ingersoll Rand's backhoe-loaders feature upgrades to the existing line. The versatile BL-275 side-shift, the BL-370 center-mount and the BL-570 center-mount B-series models have the power, reach and lifting force for today's applications. The units are suited for utility installation and landscaping applications, as well as general construction and repair work.
Kubota Tractor Corp.
The 39-gross-hp diesel-powered L39 is Kubota's latest tractor-loader-backhoe model. The unit is designed to provide maximum power and high torque rise even under heavy loads or at low speeds. Its electronically controlled hydraulic Glide Shift Transmission offers 12F/8R speeds. The new curved boom reaches a maximum 10-ft. digging depth with a minimum trench cut. The loader delivers 2,200 lbs. of lift capacity and a 9-ft. 6-in. lift height.
New Holland Construction
Celebrating 40 years of backhoe-loader heritage, New Holland introduces five new models rated from 95 to 110 gross hp. Powered by turbocharged 4.5-liter New Holland engines, the new machines feature inline loader linkage, high-capacity hydraulics and traditional geometry to provide exceptional lift capacity. The new models also offer fast cycle times, simplified maintenance and superior visibility, thanks to the narrowest backhoe boom on the market and other design features.
Coyote Loader Sales
The Coyote C14LB and C16LB articulated backhoe-loaders are powered by 42- and 63-hp Perkins four-cylinder engines, plus feature hydrostatic drive with inching mode. The infinitely variable speed of the drive system provides a working mode with a maximum speed of 7 mph and a travel mode with speeds between 15 and 19 mph. Maximum hydraulic pump output is 16 gpm. Both models are equipped with side shift backhoes.
Yanmar America Corp.
Yanmar's new CBL40 compact backhoe-loader features a 37.2-hp, three-cylinder, Tier II-compliant turbo diesel engine and hydro mechanical (HMT) transmission. Backhoe digging depth is 10 ft. with a backhoe reach of 13 ft. 2 in. Loader lift height is 9 ft. 6 in. with a lift capacity of 2,960 lbs. The standard automatic self-leveling bucket comes with a quick coupler. Other features include a swivel suspension seat, two control patterns and dual-pump excavator-type hydraulics.
Bobcat compact loader-backhoes are especially suited for projects requiring digging and loading in limited access areas. The units feature four-wheel drive and all-wheel steering for greater control and minimal ground disturbance. The side-shift backhoe on the B250 allows digging close to walls and fences. The B300 features two-speed travel with a top speed of nearly 11 mph.
According to Terex, its line of high-production loader-backhoes boast 5 degrees more fill capacity and 13 degrees better discharge over competitive models. Built for reliability, these rugged units are designed to easily tackle rough terrain, offering 19.5 in. of ground clearance. Their wide stabilizer spread and narrow boom are designed to keep operators grounded and focused on the job at hand.
The Utility Division of Komatsu America Corp. now offers excavator-style joystick controls on its WB140-2N, WB140PS-2N, WB150-2N, WB150PS-2N and WB150AWS-2N backhoe-loaders. Other recent upgrades include increased hydraulic speed and stronger, more advanced components. The WB140PS-2N and WB150PS-2N and all-wheel-steer WB150AWS-2N are equipped with Komatsu's powershift transmission.
Case Construction Equipment
The 580M, 580M Turbo, 580 Super M, 590 Super M and 580 Super M+ models feature increased swing torque for greater uphill swing power and faster backfilling with the bucket. Optional Case Pilot Controls are infinitely variable in the fore/aft and lateral positions. A thumb-proportional control for the Extendahoe provides relaxed, precise and easy fingertip operation. All models are powered by Case Family 3 Tier II-certified engines.
