Backhoe-loaders continue to be a dominant force on many jobsites.
These versatile units offer the value of two machines in one — with a highly capable loader on one end and an efficient excavating tool on the other. And their ability to accommodate a wide spectrum of attachments makes them one of the most flexible and indispensable tools in many rental fleets. Following is a look at available backhoe-loader models, both small and large.
Allmand Bros. Inc.
The Allmand compact tractor-loader-backhoe line includes diesel- and gasoline-powered models ranging from 20 to 40 hp.
The ELS backhoe design features oversized polished pins with replaceable composite bearings and urethane lip seals in all working joints. The industrial-class backhoes provide digging forces up to 6,000 lbs. Dual-cylinder, 180-degree hydraulic cushioned swing allows precise backhoe work in tight areas.
JCB's Precision Control system is available on the 214, 214S, 215 and 215S backhoe-loader models. This hydraulic over hydraulic servo-control system incorporates the same technology found on JCB excavators. Located in the armrest, the Precision Controls can be activated by simply locking the seat into the rear position, or engaging the backhoe mode switch from any non-rear-facing position for full 180-degree performance.
Caterpillar introduces its E-Series backhoe-loaders, which replace the D-Series models, that deliver increased performance, enhanced operator comfort and improved controllability. The new cab on these machines features curved glass and contoured fenders for improved serviceability and superior visibility. New Cat axles and a modified transmission increase top travel speeds 25 percent to 25 mph. Factory-installed thumbs are available in both hydraulic and stiff-link versions.
The 710G backhoe is powered by a 118-net-hp John Deere 6068T six-cylinder, Tier II diesel engine. The backhoe end delivers a 17,000-lb. Power Dig force with a maximum digging depth of 17 ft. 10 in. The loader provides 14,800 lbs. of breakout force with an 8,693-lb. lift capacity at full height. Features include pressure-compensating, load-sensing hydraulics, a 69-gal. fuel tank and a variety of tools and attachments.
The T5C has a sloped hood for improved visibility; redesigned fenders and relocated parking brake handle for better access to the engine compartment; and a heavy-duty plate-steel front grill.
A landscape-style bucket is standard. The T7 features a 26-hp Kubota diesel engine, while the two- or four-wheel-drive T9 has a 32.8-hp Kubota turbo diesel. Both the T7 and T9 provide 180-degree backhoe swing.
Volvo Construction Equipment
The Volvo BL70 is a "contractor-type/high-spec" machine equipped with standard four-wheel drive and cab. It is powered by a 90-hp Volvo turbocharged engine and incorporates a powershift transmission and load-sensing, flow-sharing hydraulics. The loader has a pilot-controlled joystick, while the backhoe is mechanically controlled with levers. The entry-level Volvo BL60 features standard two-wheel drive and canopy.
Ingersoll Rand's backhoe-loaders feature upgrades to the existing line. The versatile BL-275 side-shift, the BL-370 center-mount and the BL-570 center-mount B-series models have the power, reach and lifting force for today's applications. The units are suited for utility installation and landscaping applications, as well as general construction and repair work.
