Tearing Up the Pavement

Following is a look at the latest in cold planers and milling machines.

There is a wide range of equipment you can use to tear up, level or smooth out asphalt and/or concrete pavement. Following is a look at models recently highlighted at the 2004 BAUMA and World of Asphalt shows.

The Roadtec RX-900 three- or four-track cold planer comes with an 860-hp Caterpillar or optional 950-hp Cummins diesel engine. The unit cuts 14 in. deep and from 7 ft. 2 in. to 12 ft. 6 in. wide. Working speeds range up to 83 fpm in low or 128 fpm in high. The steering system includes proportional joystick control with coordinated, crab, front-only and rear-only steering modes. The 42-in. front load-out conveyor offers 60º swing to either side.

Vermeer’s T1055/T1255 Terrain Levelers can work in applications such as surface mining, over-burden removal, road construction/reconstruction and soil remediation. The T1255 has a 600-hp CAT engine and is capable of cutting 12 ft. wide and 27 in. deep in one pass. The T1055 has a 425-hp Cat engine and can cut 11 ft. wide and 24 in. deep in a single pass. The tilting cutter drum with two-direction leveling keeps the drum level regardless of ground conditions.

The CMI PR-600 Roto-Mill pavement profiler from Terex Roadbuilding features a six-cylinder diesel engine that develops up to 660 hp for reclaiming asphalt and concrete materials. The profiler is capable of plunge cuts up to 14 in. deep and production capacities up to 158 fpm. Its modular, quick-mount cutter features a 48-in.-diameter rotor with 185 tungsten carbide teeth and an 86-in. cutting width. A 13-ft. 7-in. high-capacity conveyor quickly discharges material.

Wirtgen America’s W 50 DC (“deep cut”) cold milling machine boasts an 8.3-in. cutting depth and a standard drum diameter of 29.5 in. The 17,000-lb. unit is powered by a 123-hp Deutz diesel engine. Both the milling drum and standard rear loading conveyor are mechanically driven. The Flexible Cutter System allows for fast change of milling drums in the field. The W 50 DC also features a spacious, ergonomically-designed operator’s platform.

Marini’s MP 2100 cold milling machine has a 6-ft. 6-in. cutting drum width and a milling depth to 12 in. The cutting drum is mechanically driven by V-belts. The MP 2100 is mounted on four independent crawlers. Features include a front-loading, hydraulically foldable conveyor belt and interchangeable tool holders. A PLC with CAN-BUS technology provides real-time control of major machine functions complete with graphic display. Power is supplied by a 598-hp diesel engine.
