Curtis Contracting Completes Concrete Patchwork in Virginia

Working overnight from July to November, crews completed 50 miles of concrete patchwork of State Route 288 and State Route 76.

"They have good parts availability. It also helps that the air compressors are easy to service and they're dependable units," says Curtis.

Humble beginnings

Curtis Contracting Inc. was founded in 1985 by Virginia F. "Betty" Curtis. "My mom and Dad, along with my wife and I started in this industry working in residential landscaping and lot building," says Curtis. "We started with just the four of us. Now, the company employs about 200 people."

The Curtis Contracting team grew because of the steady increase in opportunities. The company started with residential site development and building construction, which expanded into local, state and federal agencies. Today, the company performs as a general contractor for many clients throughout the Southeast. A large percentage of their work is done as a prime contractor for the VDOT, while they continue to focus on design-build and Federal opportunities, transportation improvements, recreational facilities, commercial development and Department of Defense projects.

"There are a lot of great contractors out there," says Curtis. But he says Curtis Contracting is always considered for the job because "we always believe in quality, integrity and honesty."

And those qualities show through the work on Route 288 and Route 76. "To a lot of people, all we're doing is pulling up the road and replacing it," says Dowling. "But it's the massive work force we have going out there, doing a massive amount of road construction work in a tight time frame. And we're doing it safely. We've got the hammer down, and we're getting it done. We're rocking the world, to be honest with you."
