Several of the newly-elected members have notable experience in the transportation industry or support for transportation infrastructure investment.
Senator-elect Mark Warner (D-Va.): Governor Warner believes we need a fresh approach to investing in America's infrastructure. His campaign highlighted our second-rate rail system, and the competitive disadvantage caused by our aging infrastructure. As governor, Warner's final budget proposal dedicated nearly $625 million in one-time surplus General Fund dollars to investment in high-priority transportation projects and programs around Virginia.
Mark Schauer (D-Mich.): As a member of the Michigan State Senate, Schauer voted for a state gas tax increase of 4 cents per gallon and was a supporter of the transportation construction industry in Michigan. The measure passed 56-48.
Paul Tonko (D-N.Y.): Tonko was an engineer in the New York State Department of Transportation and also served on the staff of the state's Department of Public Service.
