PCA's Third Annual International Student Design Competition Features Innovative, Environmentally Friendly Uses for Concrete

First Place Winner--Building Element
Students: Anne Miller
University: University of Toronto
Faculty Sponsors: Brigitte Shim, OAA, FRAIC, AIA Intl Project Title: from Folded to Form: making the MASS mobile

Miller was commended by jurors for a "very thorough exploration of the concept." Her concept of reusable fabric concrete form liners not only "used minimal materials" but allowed for a resulting "interesting aesthetic."

Panel of Judges
During the weekend of June 7, 2008, a design jury convened in Washington, D.C., to select the winning projects. The design jury consisted of the following individuals:

Terri Boake, associate professor of architecture at the University of Waterloo, Ontario, Canada, and president of the Society of Building Science Educators

Rene Cheng, Associate Professor and Head of College of Design, University of Minnesota

Shelia Kennedy, AIA, Principal of Kennedy & Violich Architecture

David Shepherd, AIA, director of sustainable development for the PCA

Donn Thompson, AIA, LEED AP, residential technology program manager for PCA

The Portland Cement Association (PCA), based in Skokie, Ill., represents cement companies in the United States and Canada. It conducts market development engineering, research, education, and public affairs programs.
