The U.S. Small Business Administration's 48th annual observance of National Small Business Week will be held in Washington, D.C. May 18 through May 20. President Obama has further extended that by proclaiming May 15 through May 21 National Small Business Week. In the President's proclamation he stated: "Our country started as an idea, and it took hard-working, dedicated, and visionary patriots to make it a reality. A successful business starts much the same way-ideas realized by entrepreneurs who dream of a better world and work until they see it through. From the family businesses that anchor Main Street to the high-tech startups that keep America on the cutting edge, small businesses are the backbone of our economy and the cornerstones of America's promise." There are many reasons why small businesses succeed. In an article looking at the power of the small business written by John R. Graham, president of Graham Communications, author Graham offers a few suggestions on why and how small businesses can achieve success. He says, "Customers want to feel someone cares about them. They want follow through and good communication." Here are a few other insights Graham offers to small business owners: It’s easy to beat the big guy if you think like a customer. Customers are on the side of small business. "They like to walk in the door and be recognized. They’ll pay more for it, too," Graham's article says. The small business makes an effort not to disappoint. All of these insights are great business management points no matter the size of your business. It seems Graham's overall theme is that if you think like the customer and work for the customer, your business has a chance to succeed. Sounds simple but isn't always easy to implement, especially if times are tough.
