  • Schedule C Companies Be Aware

By Allan Heydorn - Monday January 16, 2012
If you're operating your business as a Schedule C company and reporting it that way on your individual tax returns be aware of two questions on the tax form. The questions follow one after the other and ask, first, if the owner is required to file 1099 forms and, second, if you did or will file them. The IRS says the purpose of the questions is to remind owners they are required to file 1099s to any vendor providing $600 or more in services. Owners can answer "no" but if they are proved wrong later the answers to the questions will make it easier for the IRS to assess penalties of up to $500 per violation.
  • Internal Combustion Is Not Going Away

By Curt Bennink - Tuesday January 10, 2012
Despite all of the media attention surrounding electric vehicles and hydrogen fuel cells, don’t expect the internal combustion engine to fade away any time in the foreseeable future. Len DeLuca, director, Ford Commercial Trucks, says it best: “ We will see an increase in alternative fuels with no revolutionary technology in the next five to 10 years . . . Diesel engines will continue to be the predominant engine.” It takes time to develop alternative power sources and the necessary infrastructure, and currently electric vehicles continue to struggle with range limitations. Hydrogen fuel cells may hold promise, but they are mainly in the development stage and widespread utilization is still in the long-range future. The...
  • A Great Tool for Sustainable Roads

    - Thursday January 5, 2012
There's a lot of talk about green roads and green paving. Many of you in the asphalt industry already perform sustainable practices – warm mix asphalt, full-depth reclamation (FDR) and recycled asphalt shingles (RAS) are just a few ways asphalt contractors are "going green." After reading an article today that suggested the industry should adopt a road rating system similar to the LEED system used for buildings , I did some research. Last spring I wrote an article on Illinois' sustainable rating system, I-LAST . In that article, there was some information on a program that was getting some traction at the national level, INVEST. Here's a great website from the FHWA all about sustainable roads and green paving – what it is and...
  • Know the Equipment Before Hitting the Slopes

By Becky Schultz - Wednesday January 4, 2012
While I was doing research for an article on safe operation of hydraulic excavators in trenching and slope work (coming soon in Equipment Today 's January 2012 issue), Matthew Hendry, product consultant, hydraulic excavators, John Deere Construction & Forestry, shared an interesting anecdote. He cited a recent incident on a highway construction project where the operator, a 15-year veteran, was running a new Interim Tier 4 excavator. "He was placing boulders around a box culvert inlet and was working on a 3:1 slope," he relates. "The new excavator was configured differently than he was used to operating. He reached out, picked up a boulder and the new excavator promptly tipped on its nose." Fortunately, the operator was able to right...
  • What Are Your 2012 Business Resolutions

By Kimberly Hegeman - Tuesday January 3, 2012
Happy New Year and welcome to 2012! For me, I can't believe how fast 2011 came and went. Construction business managers may feel the same way, or maybe 2011 was a long year for your company. Common custom is to make resolutions at the start of each year. The beginning of the year is also a good time to take a look at your business and consider resolutions you can make for your business. Maybe you want to work toward improving an aspect of your business. Or maybe you want to avoid something that has been detrimental to your business in the past. And not all business-related resolutions have to be on the financial side. Consider the way your company is run. Are there changes in business management tactic you would like to implement in 2012...
  • Your Company Could Be Liable for Employees' Distracted Driving

    - Wednesday December 14, 2011
When I worked as an associate editor on some of our print publications I had to conduct interviews with contractors during their work days. I couldn't tell you how many of those interviews were done while the source was driving. And I got nervous every time. I know it's unsafe to talk on the phone while driving. Texting is even worse. I saw a headline recently of a driver who sent 11 text messages while driving. The result was pile-up on the road with 38 injuries and two deaths. In the December 2011 issue of Concrete Contractor , contributor David Whitlock addresses distracted driving - and your company's liability in the case of an accident. In order to prohibit distracted driving within your company, Whitlock suggests creating...
  • Watch Out for the Big Guy Pavers in 2012

By Allan Heydorn - Wednesday December 14, 2011
A recent forecast from the American Road & Transportation Builders Association (ARTBA) anticipates a 6% decline in highway and bridge construction by the end of this year and expects that to remain flat through 2012. ARTBA also foresees a decline of 14% in the value of pavement placed in 2011 with little expectation that will rebound before 2015. Uh-oh. That type of work is done by the Big Guys -- the companies that own and operate hot mix asphalt plants and quarries and who make their money by volume of asphalt placed (and job bonuses). They have large operations and large overhead they need to cover -- so what do they do when their bread-and-butter work starts to dwindle? They look to the commercial and industrial sector and start...
  • Where Are the West Coast Contractors?

By Allan Heydorn - Thursday December 8, 2011
Just returned from four intense days at Pavement LIVE in San Diego and I have one question: Where are all the West Coast contractors? Pavement LIVE was a re-invented approach to what was formerly National Pavement Expo West. That show had been in Las Vegas for 10 years and the shift to a San Diego resort location was just part of a change that included an expanded seminar program (39 vs. 31) and 10 live demonstrations -- including infrared, sealcoating, marking removal, cracksealing, striping and even a large-scale paving project -- right on the property of the Town & Country Resort. Everything went off pretty much as planned -- but fewer than 500 people were there to see it. So my question is, why? Sure, the economy played a role, no...
  • Safety and Technology Combine to Prevent Injuries

By Kimberly Hegeman - Thursday December 1, 2011
Safety is a common topic covered in the Construction Pros Toolbox blog. Another popular focus on FCP is technology. So it makes sense to mention a recent press release for a software solution that combines safety and technology to help keep workers safe on the job. SafetyNet is a software solution from Predictive Solutions. The software collects safety data and then uses "predictive analytics to identify trends that can affect workers' safety." And like many other services available today, there's an app for that, too. IPhone, iPad and iPod Touch users can download the SafetyNet App for mobile use. What are the benefits to this combination of technology and safety? 1. It removes manual data entry steps required by a paper...
  • ACI-WI Group Hears Talk on Electrically Conductive Concrete

By Rebecca Wasieleski - Monday November 21, 2011
Imagine a world where you could drive cross country in an electric car, never stopping to recharge your battery but instead taking advantage of induction charging through electrically conductive concrete roadways. This glimpse of the future isn't as far off as you might think. True, electric car technologies have a long way to go before this type of future can be realized, but the concrete end of it has been making advancements over the last several years. At a recent meeting of the Wisconsin Chapter of the American Concrete Institute (ACI), Art Covi, P.E., Principal Engineer, Coal-Combustion Products Team Leader for WE Energies in Milwaukee, Wis., gave a presentation entitled, "Electrically Conductive Concrete Using High Carbon Fly...
