HEATWURX in-place recycling (HIPR) is an on-site, in-place method for rehabilitating pavements. The process softens the existing HMA pavement structure with heat, removes or scarifies the surfacing material, mixes the material with recycling agent and additional aggregate or HMA (if required), and places and compacts the new recycled asphalt surface on the roadway.By eliminating the cost of transporting, processing, and stockpiling, the RAP and new HMA, HIPR can be very economical compared with alternative treatments.
The HEATWURX method is used to correct surface distress such as surface cracking, raveling, low friction values, and distortion confined to the wearing course such as corrugations and shoving. It is not intended to correct structural failures.
