In September, a drone will be used to inspect the Sandusky River Bridge in Ohio. Usually the 970-foot-long, 102-foot-wide bridge receives a handspan inspection from engineering firm AECOM> However, that is often challenging due to the length and width of the bridge.

The Ohio Turnpike and Infrastructure Commission hopes to find out if using a drone to inspect the bridge will reduce the time and expense as well as increase safety during inspection.

"It's safer for our motorists. It's safer for the people doing it. What we want to validate is that the data is as good or better than we would get by human visual inspection," said Randy Cole, executive director of the turnpike.
