Attachments Combine Forces to Clean Up Ohio Harbor

Equipment designed for geotechnical and environmental projects lowers closure costs of harbor cleanup

ALLU’s in-situ Mass Stabilization System recently completed its intended work, while two of the company's D-Series Screener Crusher processing attachments continue work on a jobsite in Ashtabula Harbor, OH. This major cleanup project includes a plan to dredge 120,000 cu. yds. of sediment from the harbor bottom. The dredged sediment is being treated and then placed into an existing wastewater settling pond near the harbor. The treated sediment will double as fill material to create and support a crowned cap during the Ohio EPA-approved closure of the 9-acre pond.

To safely dispose of the dredged harbor sediment, contractors mixed a binding agent into approximately 200,000 cu. yds. of pond sediment using two ALLU PM Power Mixers -- excavator-mounted attachments resembling a rototiller on a stem. Powered by the excavator’s hydraulic system, each has two rotating mixing drums that were able to quickly and thoroughly mix binding agents into the pond at depths of up to 21 ft. Binding agents may be injected pneumatically by the PF Pressure Feeder directly to the area being mixed through an internal nozzle located at the base of the PM or PMX mixing drums.

Rows of these drums within the attachment size reduce and screen material scooped into the attachment as the material passes through. This allows the attachment to easily mix binding agents into piled soil material.

“The mixing efficiencies of the PMX/PF and Screener Crusher machines make the best use of binding agents and improve production rates for contractors,” comments Charles Wilk, ALLU’s manager of Mass Stabilization and Remediation Applications. This ability directly contributed to lowering the closure costs of the Ashtabula Harbor cleanup project.
