The Nebraska Revenue Committee unanimously approved a bill last week that relies on a portion of the existing state sales tax and bonding to fund road work. The bill, LB84, now heads to the full Legislature. It earmarks a half-cent of the state sales tax each year for two decades, beginning in 2013, for highway construction. A projected $125 million a year would be deposited into a newly created State Highway Capital Improvement Fund set aside for high-priority improvement and reconstruction projects.
