Senate Finance Committee Weighs Options to Pay for Transport

Taxes on vehicle miles traveled and transportation tax-credit bonds considered

The Senate Finance Committee examined numerous proposals to increase federal revenue for transportation projects during a Tuesday hearing, with the federal government reaching its debt ceiling and spending more on surface transportation than is coming in to the Highway Trust Fund. Taxes on vehicle miles traveled were considered (and the Mileage Based User Fee Alliance issued a fact sheet Thursday answering frequently asked questions about the proposed financing mechanism), as were transportation tax-credit bonds.

Statements from the committee leaders and all witnesses as well as a video of Tuesday's hearing are available at 1.usa.gov/SFC051711. A 40-page report from the Joint Committee on Taxation, "Overview of Selected Tax Provisions Relating to the Financing of Infrastructure," is available at 1.usa.gov/JCT051311.
