A commission is recommending the merger of the New York Department of Transportation and the state's Thruway and Bridge authorities as a way to save between $50 million and $82 million a year.
Gov. Andrew Cuomo earlier this year appointed the Spending and Government Efficiency Commission to find efficiencies and savings in government.
The commission’s recommendation would combine the Albany-based Thruway Authority — which operates the ailing Tappan Zee Bridge as part of its mission — and the Bridge Authority, based in Highland, Ulster County. They would be further combined “where feasible” with the DOT.
“All three entities face the same macro issues of aging infrastructure and the need to fund expensive maintenance improvements,” reads the report.
