Senate to Consider Doubling Funds to Upgrade Ports and Waterways

Alexander and bipartisan group of senators plan to introduce waterway-modernization bill after the November election

Sen. Lamar Alexander (R-TN) said a bipartisan group of senators would introduce a bill that would nearly double the amount of money in the Inland Waterways Trust Fund to modernize America’s ports, locks and dams when the Senate returns after the November election.

The American Waterworks Act would try to address shortfalls in U.S. port and waterway infrastructure, in preparation for the 2014 completion of the expansion of the Panama Canal, which will provide the United States with more trade opportunities.
