GA Senate OKs More Leeway in Design-Build Transpo Contracts

Bill going to the Georgia House would also do away with low-bidder requirement

The Georgia Senate unanimously approved legislation Monday that would expand the Georgia Department of Transportation’s ability to use the design-build method of planning and constructing projects.

With design-build, the DOT hires the same contractor to plan and construct highways, bridges, rail and buildings.

The legislation also does away with a requirement that contracts go to the low bidder. Instead, the agency could award design-build contracts based on “best value.”
