Missouri Senate Approves Sales Tax for Transportation

Penny sales tax increase passes first round of approvals; measure would raise nearly $8 billion over a decade to fund transportation projects

Missouri senators on Wednesday endorsed a proposed penny sales tax increase that could raise nearly $8 billion over a decade for transportation projects. State gas taxes would need to rise 20 to 25 cents to generate equivalent revenue.

The first-round approval needs another affirmative vote before the measure would move to the House, and even if passes there, it would require voter approval.
