A recent report released by the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) estimates that the U.S. is only on track to fund approximately 60% of its infrastructure needs through 2020, and failure to address the funding gap will cost the U.S. significantly in lost GDP and jobs. While Public Private Partnerships (P3s) and other alternative delivery methods are not yet as common in the U.S. as they are in Canada, new legislation and the need to replace aging infrastructure are changing the industry landscape as it looks ahead to the next decade of construction projects.
The American Bar Association’s (ABA) Forum on the Construction Industry, the largest organization of construction lawyers in the world, is holding its 2013 Fall Meeting in Washington, D.C. on September 26-27, 2013. In addition to P3s and alternative project delivery, this year’s Fall Program (“Capital Projects: P3s, Design-Build and Beyond”) will address the evolving role of the design professional, the growing importance of green projects and the issues surrounding multi-jurisdictional and cross-border transactions.
Matthew Alter, partner at Cassels Brock and the only Canadian lawyer serving the ABA Forum in a leadership capacity, is Co-Chair of the Fall Program, which will bring together leading construction law experts from the U.S.A, Canada and internationally to discuss current challenges, issues and recent developments in construction law.
