400 Chicagoland Concrete Truck Drivers Strike

Teamsters outside of Cook County have rejected four proposals, including the one ratified in September by workers in Cook County

About 400 concrete truck drivers walked off their jobs on Tuesday and Wednesday after rejecting a proposed labor contract with the Northern Illinois Ready Mix and Materials Association.

The proposal, which would have covered suburban drivers outside of Cook County, included language that would have eliminated seniority rights, said Kelly Hemphill, a worker on strike in Addison, near the Veterans Memorial Tollway.

Workers from four Teamsters unions rejected the proposal on Sunday. The unions and the association, which represents Ozinga Ready Mix Concrete, Welsch Ready Mix, Prairie Materials and Coal City Redi-Mix, have been negotiating since the contract expired in April.
