Worker Crushed to Death in St. Petersburg Roller Accident

53-year-old worker was driving a roller on a sand berm when the machine slipped and rolled on top of him

A worker was killed Thursday after he was pinned under a large piece of equipment at a jobsite near Sawgrass Lake Park in St. Petersburg, Fla.

The accident occurred about 3:45 p.m. Thursday as John Winchester, 53, of Palmetto, was driving a roller on top of a sand berm. The company he worked for, Woodruff & Sons, of Bradenton, had been hired by the Southwest Florida Water Management District to build the berm.

Winchester was pinned under the machine after it slipped and rolled on top of him.
