Caltrans Studying I-80 Construction Zone Crashes

Eight incidents in eight days resulted in six minor injuries on Sacramento's Interstate 80 construction zone

Caltrans reconfigured the eastbound lanes of Interstate 80, and crashes and injuries tripled on the 10-mile stretch of freeway compared to the month before the alterations. According to California Highway Patrol data there were 45 crashes and 26 injuries in the six weeks after the lane reconfiguration.

Some drivers say the lane configuration are too tricky, but some transportation officials say the crashes were caused by distracted drivers who weren't more alert in the construction zone. Safety inspectors are reviewing the California Highway Patrol's data to see if there are any patterns to the crashes.
