Jury Rules Contractor Should Pay Woman $15.8 Million for Construction Zone Crash

Lane Construction considering appeal in case centered around responsibility for traffic-control plan

A jury in Allegheny County Common Pleas Court ruled that Lane Construction should pay a woman $15.8 million for injuries she suffered in a suburban-Pittsburgh work zone crash five years ago.

Brenda Gump-Schragl, 56, sued claiming the Route 51 construction site in Pleasant Hills, Penn., was dangerous and that the company made no changes despite previous crashes along the construction zone.

The woman was seriously injured when the car she was riding in was struck trying to make a left turn across the highway.

Lane's attorney argued at trial that the contractor didn’t have authority to change PennDOT's traffic control plan.
