Lawmakers in North Carolina are starting to explore how to prevent construction companies from misclassifying workers. So far in 2014, the state has re-classified nearly 4,000 employees from independent contractors to employees, which is estimated to have cost the state nearly a half billion dollars in lost state and federal taxes. In 2013, North Carolina re-classified nearly 5,700 workers.
