Caltrans has suspended a project to replace six expansion joints on the upper deck of the western span of the Bay Bridge after commuters experienced significant delays. The project required steel plates to be placed on the roadway to accommodate the work, and motorists were slowing down or coming to a complete stop when driving over the plates. Caltran engineers are now looking into other options that would have a lesser impact on traffic.
