Groundbreaking for the first phase of netZero Village in Rotterdam, N.Y., signaled the start of construction for the six-building complex. Phase I, which includes 72 apartments, is set for completion by June. The second phase will add seven more buildings, a clubhouse, an athletic field, walking trails and community gardens. The total cost for both phases is $20 million. The New York State Energy Reserach and Development Authority is providing support ($2.1 million) through its Low-Rise Residential New Construction Program, the NY-Sun Incentive Program and the Solar Thermal (Hot Water) program.

The complex is expected to product as much ore more energy than it uses.
