Minnesota Facing Cement Shortage

Contractors are asking MN Gov. Dayton for an executive order that would allow truck drivers to increase their hours on the roads, and haul loads up to 100,000 lbs. to help with cement shortage and construction delays

CBS Minnesota

After the Mississippi and Minnesota rivers flooded last spring, problems began to arise for Minnesota's concrete industry. A shortage of cement is causing many contractors to truck in their cement and concrete from out of state, which is causing delays. Large projects, like the new Vikings stadium and St. Croix River bridge, are using large quantities of concrete, which means the smaller contractors and projects are feeling the pinch even more. But even with priority shipments, the large projects are facing some schedule disruptions as well.

To try to help the issue, Minnesota's concrete industry is asking Governor Dayton for an executive order, like what was done during a recent propane shortage, that would allow truck drivers to increase their hours on the road and haul loads up to 100,000 pounds.
