Houston Tops Forbes' List of Most New Construction in 2014

The Houston metro area saw $25.1 billion worth of new construction in the first nine months of 2014, a 176% increase from the same time in 2013

Thanks to a boom in oil production, the Houston metro area has seen a surge in construction including residential, manufacturing, office and even hotels. Houston has had $25.1 billion worth of new construction projects break ground in the first nine months of 2014, which is a 176 percent increase over the same period in 2013. Houston has also gained about 630,000 jobs since 2005. All the activity has propelled Houston to the top of Forbes' 2014 list of the U.S. cities with the most new construction.

The New York metro area ranks in at number two after topping the list for two years. The New York metro area had a total of $23.3 billion in new construction starts during the first nine months of 2014, which figures to be a 36 percent increase over 2013.

Rounding out the top five are:

  • Dallas with $10.8 billion in 2014, a -3 percent change from 2013
  • Washington, D.C. with $9.5 billion in 2014, a 13 percent change from 2013
  • Los Angeles with $7.7 billion, a 9 percent change from 2013
