Los Angeles' Mayor Eric Garcetti has proposed retrofitting thousands of older buildings to help strengthen the water and communications systems in preparation for the next big earthquake. This would be the city's first majory earthquake perparation initiative since the 1994 Northridge earthquake.

The mayor of Los Angeles proposed on Monday that the city retrofit thousands of older buildings and bolster the water and communications systems to prepare for a possible major temblor along the San Andreas Fault.

Recommendations for retrofits are based on a one-year study and target pre-1978 apartment buildings, pre-1976 concrete buildings as well as the city's old pipes and aqueducts. The mayor estimates the billions of dollars to fund the retrofits would be shared by the public and private sectors.
