The 2015 Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra 1500s topped PickupTrucks.com’s light-duty pickup shootout in a head-to-head comparison of V8-powered 4x4s priced less than $55,000. Ford’s 2015 F-150 finished third, with a point total within 3% of GM’s twins.

The top three finishers were separated by just 45 points:

  1. Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Z71 LTZ 6.2-liter, 1,554 points
  2. GMC Sierra 1500 SLT 6.2-liter, 1,543 points
  3. Ford F-150 XLT 5.0-liter, 1,509 points

The Chevy and GMC entries both were powered by the biggest V8 engines in the test – the 6.2-L EcoTec3 – mated to GM’s brand-new eight-speed transmission. Perhaps not surprisingly, the pair won nine of PickupTrucks.com’s 11 performance tests.

Testing included empty and loaded track performance, fuel economy testing on the road, and acceleration tests with loaded trailers up the infamous Davis Dam grade on Arizona Route 68.

A third of the available points were awarded by five judges in subjective evaluations of six categories:

  • Performance
  • Seating comfort and ergonomics
  • Technology and entertainment
  • Ride and suspension
  • Visibility
  • Value
