The construction industry lost 2.2 million jobs between 2006 and 2010. While the industry is ramping up hiring and wage growth, it has still only recovered 30 percent of those jobs lost. However, on the positive side, the jobs gained in 2014 grew at more than twice the rate of the overall labor market. The industry added 48,000 jobs in December and a total of 290,000 in 2014 - a nine-year high.

In addition to adding jobs, the overall payroll growth was 252,000 in December and the unemployment rate fell to 5.6 percent.
