Michigan Governor Signs $1.3B Increase in Road Funding Contingent on Sales Tax Increase

Law would raise the flat per-gallon fuel tax while exempting fuel from the state's 6 percent sales tax

Michigan's Governor Rick Snyder signed laws that would increase the amount spent to fix deteriorating roads and other transportation infrastructure by $1.3 billion. The funding, however, is contingent on Michigan voters increasing the state sales tax to 7 percent in May.

Michigan Senate Votes to Double Gas Tax

According to an article from The Modesto Bee, the package of 11 laws would raise the flat per-gallon fuel tax while exempting fuel from the state's 6 percent sales tax. Another one of the measures would make gasoline and diesel taxes the same.

However, if voters do not approve the sales tax increase none of these new laws would take effect.
