Washington state has abandoned the idea of building a tall cable-stayed span for the Portage Bay stretch of Highway 520. Instead, the state is going with the less-expensive and lower-profile concrete-girder design. The new design would result in fewer columns in the water than the existing 1963 bridge. This section of the Highway 520 project is still currently unfunded and dependent on a potential multi-billion dollar state transportation plan.
