Two New Proposals Tackle Infrastructure Funding

Minnesota's governor proposes tax hikes as source of funding; US Senate bill calls for $1 trillion over the next five years

Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) introduced the Rebuild America Act bill on Monday, which calls for providing $1 trillion over the next five years for investment in roads, bridges, transit, rail lines, water systems, ports and inland waterways, national parks, municipal broadband systems, and the electric grid. Sanders did not specify a source for funding the bill.

Also on Monday Minnesota Governor Mark Dayton unveiled a plan to resurface or replace 2,200 miles of roads, repair 330 bridges and boost funding for local infrastructure projects. Dayton's proposal would add a new 6.5 percent tax on gas at the wholesale level and increase license tab fees. It would also feature a separate sales tax increase in the Twin Cities, mostly for increased bus services. Dayton's proposal would spend nearly $11 billion on transportation over the next 10 years using a mix of tax increases, fees and leftover cash.
