Idaho Bill Calls for 8-cent Gas Tax Hike

Proposed changes would raise nearly $200 million more a year for infrastructure funding

The Spokesman-Review

A new Idaho bill proposes an increase in the state's gas and diesel fuel taxes. The bill was introduced in the Idaho House on Monday. The proposed legislation — which also includes a 50 percent increase in car registration fees and a 25 percent increase for trucks — would raise nearly $200 million more a year for infrastructure funding. The 8-cent increase for next year would raise Idaho's gas tax to 33 cents per gallon. The bill calls for additional 1-cent increases in subsequent years. The legislation also calls for a 12-cent increase in the per-gallon tax on diesel fuel. Finally, the billing would shift $22 million for Idaho's general fund to road funds.
