Officials celebrated the groundbreaking for a 15-mile portion of the Interstate 11 highway bypass project that will link Las Vegas and Phoenix. This portion will run from I-515 to U.S. 93, going around Boulder City before connecting with the Hoover Dam bypass bridge. With an expected 2018 completion, this portion of the project is expected to save at least 30 minutes of travel from the Hoover Dam bridge to Henderson.

This $318 million portion of the I-11 project is being built in two simultaneous phases with the Nevada DOT taking responsibility for a 2.5 mile stretch of the road and the Regional Transportation Commission of Southern Nevada taking responsibility to build the remain 12.5 miles of road. The project is being funded with $291 million in federal funds, $5 million in state funds and $22 million generated by a recent county gas tax increase.
