Indiana Senate Stalls Proposal to Repeal State's Construction Wage Law

Indiana lawmakers will continue to discuss the pros and cons of repealing the state's construction wage law rather than repeal it right away

On Monday Indiana Senate leaders postponed discussion on a proposal that would repeal the state's law that sets wages for public construction projects. Republican Governor Mike Pence and GOP legislative leaders are pushing to repeal the law, saying the boards set wages that are artificially high and prevent more competitive bid prices that would save taxpayers money on public projects. Opponents argue repealing the law would not greatly reduce project costs and could hurt local companies if the door is opened for low-paying, out-of-state contractors.

Lawmakers will continue to discuss the measure and consider the 27 proposed amendments.
