Senator Charles Schumer (D-NY) is calling on the U.S. Customs and Border Protection and the U.S. General Services Administration to secure $64 million to overhaul the U.S. plaza at the Lewiston-Queenstown Bridge. This comes seven years after the Canadian Prime Minister announced a $140 million multi-phase construction project to update the border plaza.

Schemer's plan calls for replacing six existing passenger inspection lanes, building five new lanes and renovating current lanes for commercial vehicles. He also proposed adding a bus processing lane, larger parking for officers and secondary inspections as well as the expansion of the plaza's outdoor canopy.

According to Schumer, the construction project could spur around 1,500 jobs and mark the largest renovation to the plaza since it was built in 1962.
