Study: BIM Reduces Material Waste, Construction Costs and Request for Information During Construction

Survey respondents experienced at least a 5% reduction in material waste, final construction costs, requests for more information during construction and reportable safety incidents

Engineering News-Record

A recent study examining BIM success factors and modeling showed construction industry respondents have experienced decreases in requests for more information during construction, reduced material waste and decreases in final construction costs, among other benefits. It's important to note that the study was limited to general contractors, construction managers and trade contractors with $50 million or more in annual construction value.

According to Engineering News-Record, respondents experienced at least a 5% reduction in material wastes, schedules and final construction costs as well as at least 5% decrease in requests for more information (indicating that BIM produces better construction documents). Among all respondents, construction contractors were the most likely to report BIM reduces construction costs.

A higher percentage of general contractors and construction managers reported these 5% decreases compared to trade contractors. However, more trade contractors reported at least 5% reduction in reportable safety incidents compared to GC and CM respondents.
