Pennsylvania DOT says Lititz Pike Bridge Structurally Sound

Bernard Harris
Lancaster New Era (Pennsylvania)

Mar. 7--Pieces of material may be falling from the Lititz Pike bridge, but state transportation officials said motorists traveling over the bridge shouldn't be concerned.

It is the trains below that have a problem.

A reported 70-foot section of concrete under the bridge, which carries Route 501 over the Amtrak line north of Lancaster, fell Wednesday morning onto catenary lines that power Amtrak's electric passenger trains.

The debris tripped a circuit and halted trains for about 45 minutes until Amtrak workers cleared debris from the tracks below.

A PennDOT spokesman said today the initial reports sound worse than the actual condition of the bridge.
