SILVER SPRING, MD - The National Ready Mixed Concrete Association announces the first U.S. ready mixed concrete plant to earn the Green-Star designation. A ceremony was observed on July 29 to mark the event, held in Seven Points, TX, the location of NRMCA producer member Transit Mix Concrete & Materials Company Plant No. 2068.

The Green-Star flag raising ceremony included guest speakers Mark Potts, associate director of compliance assurance and enforcement from the Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) Region VI; Frank Craddock, NRMCA chairman of the Board of Directors; Denise Corrales, NRMCA Environmental Task Group chairman; Mike Stewart, president of the Texas Aggregate and Concrete Association and Robert Garbini, president of NRMCA. Carl Campbell, president of Transit Mix, accepted the NRMCA Green-Star certificate on behalf of the company. Gary Mullings, NRMCA senior vice president of operations and compliance, served as master of ceremonies. Also attending the event were Texas Senator Robert Nichols and Gail Green, representing U.S. Senator John Cornyn.

At the conclusion of the formal ceremony, a Green-Star flag was raised alongside the American, Texas and Transit Mix flags. Matthew Hallmark, Transit Mix director of construction and environmental, then conducted a plant tour for visitors and the press.

"I congratulate Transit Mix on obtaining the Green-Star and going beyond compliance," said EPA's Mark Potts. "It is an outstanding achievement that reflects on the business culture and its commitment to growth, but not at the expense of the environment. It shows that environmental considerations are integrated into the day to day plant operations and business decision-making and the Green-Star program brings those principles home."

"I challenge the ready mixed concrete industry to follow the example set by Transit Mix here today," added NRMCA Board Chairman Frank Craddock.
