Commercial Construction Falls in the O.C.

By JEFF COLLINS, The Orange County Register (California)

Non-residential construction fell in Orange County last year to the lowest level in 14 years.

According to the Construction Industry Research Board, the estimated value of building permits for offices, hotels, stores and other non-residential structures totaled $951 million in 2009.

That's down 33.7 percent from 2008 and nearly two-thirds below the level of Orange County building in 2006. It was the lowest level since 1995 and the fifth-lowest level in inflation-adjusted records dating back to 1988.

No new industrial buildings were built last year. Office construction fell 96 percent from 2008 to $4.6 million.
