Recycled Shingles in the Mix at Oldcastle Materials

ATLANTA - Oldcastle Materials incorporates recycled asphalt shingles (RAS) and reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP) into its mixes as part of its ongoing commitment to environmental responsibility. Two of its companies, Texas Bitulithic and APAC-Missouri, are recycling shingles in record numbers, according to industry estimates.

According to the National Asphalt Pavement Association 55 companies reported using a total of 335,000 tons of RAS in 2010, with an average of about 6,000 tons per company. Texas Bitulithic and APAC-Missouri each used 30,000 tons - more than five times the average.

Texas Bitulithic collects manufactured shingle waste in two locations from two manufacturers and has just begun receiving it from a third manufacturer in a new location. Company President Steve Koonce estimates the new location will add 10,000 tons to the mix.

APAC-Missouri currently collects tear-off shingles in two locations and will expand to at least one additional location within the next three months. "We have utilized approximately 30,000 tons of shingles in our mixes in each of the last two years," said David Guillaume, company president.

APAC-Asheville in North Carolina has just begun the process but has caught the eye of producers of "This New House," which airs on the DIY Network. They will be using recycled shingles to pave a homeowner's driveway, according to Operations Manager Brad Caldwell.
