SILVER SPRING, MD--The National Ready Mixed Concrete Association has presented the following awards during its annual convention which was just completed in Las Vegas prior to the opening of the CONEXPO-CON/AGG Show.
2011 Richard D. Gaynor Award - Edwin R. Dunstan, Jr. and Ken Day. Mr. Dunstan has worked as a concrete materials engineer for 38 years. From 1972-1980 he was a quality control and research engineer for the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation in Denver. From 1980-1988, he worked as an independent concrete materials consultant and educator in Colorado. He joined Florida Mining and Materials in 1988 as a concrete materials-quality control engineer and remained with the company through acquisitions by Southdown and Cemex. He retired from Cemex in August 2008 as director of technical services, ready mix. Now semi-retired, he remains active in the concrete industry as a concrete materials consultant and examiner for the Construction Materials Engineering Council in Orlando, FL. Mr. Dunstan holds Bachelor's and Master's degrees from Kansas State University in Manhattan.
Ken Day is a world renowned expert on concrete quality control. Mr. Day's expertise has been on concrete mix design, quality control and specifications. He has worked in the ready mixed concrete and precast industries. He has also worked as a consulting structural engineer, a university lecturer and a general investigator and legal expert witness of defective concrete. Mr. Day is a pioneer in developing computerized mix design methodology and statistical quality control of concrete. He has used aggregate specific surface concepts in his mix design process to achieve workable concrete mixtures for different placement methods. Since the mid 1950s, Ken Day has authored numerous papers and presented at various international conferences across the globe in on a wide range of topics on concrete technology, most of which are posted on his website. He is also author of the internationally acclaimed book - Concrete Mix Design, Quality Control and Specification, now in its 3rd edition. He graduated from Manchester University in the UK in 1952. He is an Honorary Member of the Concrete Institute of Australia; Fellow of the Institute of Engineers, Australia; Fellow of the Institute of Concrete Technologists, U.K.; Fellow of the American Concrete Institute and received a lifetime achievement award from CANMET/ACI.
Richard D. Gaynor retired as executive vice president of NRMCA and the National Aggregates Association in 1996 after more than 40 years of service with the associations. His knowledge, experience and attention to detail on technical issues related to concrete was well recognized. In 1997, the NRMCA Research, Engineering and Standards (RES) Committee established the Richard D. Gaynor Award in his honor.
2010 State Association of the Year Award - The Indiana Ready Mixed Concrete Association (IRMCA) for its contributions to the industry in the areas of research, education, advocacy and promotion.
Highlights from IRMCA's nomination include: • Concrete Café Program - IRMCA producer members can fill out a form to request free training programs and assistance at their offices - IRMCA staff provide the training and the lunch, the member just provides the facility and an audience. • Concrete for Kids Program - familiarizes fourth graders with the concrete industry, the basics of concrete and includes a hands-on portion where students mix concrete based on their own mix design, with a goal of obtaining the strongest mix. • Promotion target on streets and local roads - Recognizing that the streets and local roads market provides almost endless potential, IRMCA has had significant success reaching decision makers such as mayors, street commissioners, highway supervisors, and city and county engineers who are looking for alternative construction materials; this success has led to a number of showcase projects in the state. • Developed a Jobsite Washout Certification Program - provides the PowerPoint class, video, book and exam; designed as a train-the-trainer so that plant managers can train their staff. • Creation of a "Safety and Environmental Pit Crew," a network of experts who help members with their safety and environmental questions and issues.
National High School Essay Contest - Charles Jewell has won the 2010 NRMCA National High School Essay Contest. Jewell's essay was submitted as the state winner by the Indiana Ready Mixed Concrete Association. His telling of concrete's story of quality, durability, innovation and environmental superiority won over other excellent entries from Washington, Tennessee, Mississippi, Kentucky, Arizona, South Dakota and Montana. Jewell earned a $2,000 scholarship and his essay will appear in the May/June edition of NRMCA's Concrete InFocus magazine.
2011 William B. Allen Award - Thomas E. Chandler, chairman, Chandler Concrete Company. Mr. Chandler has been a part of the ready mixed concrete industry since 1973 and a leader of NRMCA since Chandler Concrete joined the association in 1975. He has served on many NRMCA committees and as chairman of the Board of Directors in 1999. Mr. Chandler was named an Honorary Director of NRMCA in 2010. He attended Duke University and received his Bachelor's Degree in economics from Lynchburg College.
The Allen award is named after one of the ready mixed concrete industry's most distinguished and accomplished figures, Bill Allen, whose has more than 55 years of concrete and aggregates-related experience and has long been involved with many NRMCA activities and events.
2011 Grassroots Activist Award - Karl Watson, Jr., president, East Region, Cemex, West Palm Beach, FL. Mr. Watson holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in business and an MBA. He previously headed the Western Division of Rinker Materials Corporation and has served on the NRMCA Board and Executive Committee. He has served on various NRMCA committees, including Government Affairs, Legal Activities, Educational Activities and Vision Strategic Planning. Mr. Watson is also a member of the Association of Building Contractors and the American Concrete Institute.
2011 Lifetime Achievement Award for Promotion - Frank Kozeliski, retired, Gallup Sand & Gravel, Gallup, NM. Frank Kozeliski's began his career 40 years ago with a Master's Degree in civil engineering that he earned in part with research on lightweight concrete. In 1976 he became the materials engineer of Gallup Sand & Gravel, a ready mixed concrete company in Gallup, NM. In 1980 he became general manager and eventually president and owner of the company where he remained until his retirement. Mr. Kozeliski has distinguished himself over four decades through his ongoing improvements of the ready mixed product and its delivery along with his tireless promotional efforts in support of concrete.
He has served on the NRMCA Board of Directors and has been active on many ACI national committees. Perhaps Mr. Kozeliski's most notable accomplishment began more than 20 years ago when he started using a mixture he called "open graded, no-fines concrete," which proved to be a great contribution for concrete in support of sustainability. This discovery is generally known today as pervious concrete. He was named a national "fellow" of the American Concrete Institute for his contributions to concrete education, research, development, design, construction and management and for the past several years has served as chairman of NRMCA's Pervious Concrete Promotion Subcommittee.
Fleet Graphics Awards - This awards contest, cosponsored by Concrete Products magazine, honors the best ready mixed concrete truck paint and decal schemes, and recognizes individual company's methods of promoting professionalism and positive public image for the industry. The award winners were determined by voting at the NRMCA Fall Conference in Charlotte, NC and by industry consultants and equipment representatives. Awards were given in three separate classes: by company size, specialty truck designs and antique trucks. The honored companies are:

2011 Joseph E. Carpenter Award - John Carew, Carew Concrete, Appleton, WI. Mr. Carew grew up in his family-owned concrete business and began attending OES Committee meetings in 1991. He led the committee's efforts in development of the NRMCA Cement Burn Awareness Kit and developed a warning label approved by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. He also was instrumental in developing the association's bi-fold for warning notification of the cement burn issue. Mr. Carew has been a presenter at numerous OES Fall Forums. He was the OES Committee vice chairman in 2005 and 2006, and was the OES Committee chairman in 2007 and 2008. As chairman, Mr. Carew is credited with leading the development of the highly successful NRMCA National Mixer Driver Championship Program. He has also served on the NRMCA Board of Directors.
The award recognizes ready mix executives for their lifetime contribution to the industry in the field of operations, safety or environmental management. It is named after Joseph E. Carpenter of Rinker Materials, West Palm Beach, FL, who was instrumental in the formation and early operation of the NRMCA Committee on Maintenance. Shortly after his untimely passing in 1988, the OES Committee decided to honor him with this award program.
2011 Driver of the Year Award - Bob Lowery, Jack B. Parson Companies, Ogden, UT. Mr. Lowery was honored for his career achievements, safety record, professionalism, driving competency and customer service skills. He has worked for Jack B. Parson Companies for more than 43 years. As the winner, Mr. Lowery received a $5,000 check from the Truck Mixer Manufacturers Bureau. Runner-up Dominic Giancaspro of Prairie Materials, Bridgeview, IL, received $500. Concrete Products cosponsored the program.
