Washington, D.C. - Thriving in today's tough road and bridge construction market requires industry professionals to keep their project management skills fresh and master the latest industry tools and innovations. A program scheduled for January 10-14, 2011, in the Nation's Capital and hosted by the American Road & Transportation Builders Association (ARTBA), will help you achieve these goals.
Operated by the ARTBA Foundation's "Transportation Builder Institute," the intensive Project Management Academy is built around an acknowledged, highly successful adult learning model - teaching by leading experts in the field - supported by peer-to-peer knowledge sharing. It covers these areas:
Planning & Scheduling
Brigham Young University Professor Jay Newitt, the author of "Construction Scheduling, Principles and Practices," will lead a discussion on the importance of planning, scheduling systems, preparation and analysis, and use of Critical Path Method.
Construction Documentation
Chris Anzidei and Chris Brasco, attorneys with Watt, Tieder, Hoffar & Fitzgerald, LLP, will address the importance of construction documentation to several aspects of contract administration, including change orders, scheduling and delay provisions, bonds and liens, design claims, differing site conditions, and acceleration claims.
Management & Leadership
Dr. Jim Gelatt, University of Maryland University College director of Interdisciplinary Studies in Management Track and author three books on management, will focus on building consensus, conflict resolution, negotiation techniques on the jobsite, conducting effective meetings, interviewing and hiring, assessing job applicants, employee management and jobsite pitfalls of resource control.
Safety
ARTBA's top safety executive for more than a decade, Vice President of Safety & Education Brad Sant will provide an overview of key safety duties and responsibilities for managers. Specifically, he will cover accident costs and impact, experience modification rate, insurance, safety and health regulatory compliance, hazard control and pre-planning, and evaluating sub-contractors safety performance.
Client Relations, Ethics & Team Building
Other PMA sessions will be led by:
- Mark Compton, director of government affairs and business development for American Infrastructure, who will discuss client relations and closing new business deals;
- Michael Branca, a lawyer with from Peckar & Abramson, P.C., who will offer insights into handling workplace ethical dilemmas; and
- Eriq Powers, owner of Go-NEXTeams, who will guide attendees through a series of exercises to discover the value of team building and cooperation.
Registration for the PMA is $2,299 for ARTBA members and $2,499 for non-members. Participants will be eligible to earn 36 professional development hours.
