American Concrete Institute Announces Four New Publications

FARMINGTON HILLS, MI - The American Concrete Institute (ACI) announces the availability of four new publications to educate and inform industry professionals on the newest concrete-related information and technology. As always, ACI members receive a special discount (up to 40 percent) on all ACI publications. Publications can be ordered by calling 248-848-3800 or online at www.concrete.org.

Report on Soil Cement (230.1R-09)
This 2009 document update contains research documentation, design guidelines, and project examples for soil cement road base design and other applications, including soil cement for reservoir liner protection and containment, river bank erosion control, and flood protection projects. In addition, the updated report includes soil cement construction quality control and testing and inspection guidelines.

"I strongly recommend the 2009 ACI 230 Report on Soil Cement as a key reference guide for soil cement design, review, and construction to engineers, designers, reviewers, and contractors," said Mark Krebs, PE, chair of ACI committee 230, Soil Cement. "There is detailed information and references for the experienced soil cement expert, as well as introductory information for those considering soil cement application for first time."

Specification for Cast-In-Place Concrete Pipe (346-09)
This specification covers construction of earth-supported cast-in-place concrete pipe (CIPCP), and is recommended to any architect or engineer using CIPCP. This document must be used in conjunction with ACI 301, Specifications for Structural Concrete.

Important updates to this document include the requirement for a quality assurance plan that addresses pipe geometry, concrete mixture, concrete curing, geotechnical conditions, test reports, and repair methods, and updated formatting to current ACI requirements.

Guide for Specifying Underground Shotcrete (506.5R-09)
This guide is an essential reference for the owner, designer, specifier, and inspection and testing personnel interested in or in need of information and background on the application of shotcrete underground. The guide discusses the combination of shotcrete and other support elements used to provide early and effective tunnel support, and provides comprehensive guidance for developing underground shotcrete specifications. The guide is not a comprehensive treatise on the design of ground support systems, but is intended to provide sufficient information to understand how the combination and sequencing of ground support elements can influence the performance, application, inspection, and testing of shotcrete.

"This document was developed over a period of ten years by a group of dedicated engineers, contractors, equipment manufacturers, and material suppliers with extensive experience in civil and mining applications," said Chris Breeds, member of ACI committee 506, Shotcreeting. "It is recommended reading for those who are about to embark on their first shotcrete project as well as those seasoned veterans who have contributed to the projects on which the guide is based."

Requirements for Design of a Special Unbonded Post-Tensioned Precast Shear Wall (ITG 5.2-09)
This standard defines procedures that may be used to design special precast concrete shear walls, coupled or uncoupled, composed of discretely jointed precast panels that are vertically post-tensioned to the foundation with unbonded tendons. Such walls are suitable for use in regions of high seismicity and for structures assigned to high seismic design categories. This standard describes the procedures that the designer may use to demonstrate, through analysis, that one type of unbonded post-tensioned precast wall has strength and toughness at least equal to that of comparable special reinforced concrete monolithic walls. The standard consists of Design Requirements and a Commentary.
