JLG Introduces World's Tallest Boom Lift

JLG Industries launched its 1850SJ Ultra boom with nearly three million cubic feet of reachable space. With a working height over 185 feet, this is the second boom introduced within the past year to reach 180 feet or above.

Genie introduced its 180-foot SX-180 at the Bauma trade show in Germany last April, and officially unveiled the machine to U.S. audiences in January. JLG's 1850SJ exceeds the working height of the SX-180 by 5 feet. Both models suggest a trend toward booms with heights unheard of not so long ago.

Delivering 19 stories of working height, this latest innovation in the JLG line of Ultra Series boom lifts reaches more applications at unprecedented heights, moving aerial work platforms into applications previously reserved for truck-mounted booms and allowing operators to work more effectively and productively on the jobsite. The boom will be on display March 4-8 at CONEXPO, in booth #1037 at the Las Vegas Convention Center.

The JLG 1850SJ offers a maximum capacity of 1,000 pounds, allowing operators to move more tools and materials to the elevated worksite. Productivity is further enhanced with faster cycle speeds, enabling the boom to extend from ground to full height in less than five minutes and operators to spend more time working and less time positioning the lift.

Moreover, the 1850SJ includes a telescopic jib that extends and retracts to provide additional reach, up-and-over capability and the ability to telescope into and around structures in a variety of applications, including steel erection; energy-related construction such as petrochemical, power generation and wind plants; stadium, convention center and theater construction; and entertainment and studio-related applications.

In addition, an exclusive updated platform LCD display provides even more information to optimize service and operator productivity. A graphic display of the operator’s position in the work envelope aids in positioning, and the communication of service codes, engine status, fuel levels, and other messages assists the operator and service provider with operation, diagnosis, and troubleshooting.

Ford says the JLG 1850SJ introduces industry-leading productivity, thanks to its unprecedented work envelope, class-leading 1,000-pound capacity, fast lift speeds and versatile telescopic jib. The lift further enhances productivity with a powerful turbo diesel engine that provides 99.8 horsepower to optimize drive and lift performance. In addition, standard four-wheel drive and four-wheel steer maximize jobsite maneuverability.

Operators will also appreciate the ease with which the lift can be moved from one jobsite to another, taking advantage of a design that does not require an oversized permit on highways – only a weight permit. Oversized permits can be expensive and take several days to obtain; they usually require an escort vehicle and place restrictions on which roads can be traveled upon and when. The machine design also features axles that extend or retract in less than one minute to quickly transition to or from the transport mode.

Serviceability and operational benefits extend beyond the new LCD display to include operation and control layouts similar to all other JLG booms, making training and operation of the lift easier. In addition, hoods open wide to provide easy access to key serviceable components.
