ACI Honors Outstanding Contributions and Service to the Industry

On Sunday, October 26, 2014, the American Concrete Institute (ACI) presents six awards and delivers the next presentation of the Katharine and Bryant Mather Commemorative Lecture Series during the ACI Fall 2014 Convention Opening Session.

On Sunday, October 26, 2014, the American Concrete Institute (ACI) presents six awards and delivers the next presentation of the Katharine and Bryant Mather Commemorative Lecture Series during the ACI Fall 2014 Convention Opening Session.

The Arthur J. Boase Award, is presented by the ACI Foundation’s Concrete Research Council for outstanding activities and achievements in the field of reinforced concrete. The awardee is Robert J. Frosch, FACI, in recognition of his “significant research work on shear, bond and cracking behavior of reinforced and prestressed concrete systems, and for his service on ACI technical committees.”

The Robert E. Philleo Award, also presented by the ACI Foundation’s Concrete Research Council recognizes Edward J. Garboczi, FACI, Fellow in the Applied Chemicals and Materials Division in the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) in Boulder, Colo. “for the development, application, and propagation of the computational materials science of concrete.”

The Jean-Claude Roumain Innovation in Concrete Award was established in 2010, and the awardee is Peter H. Emmons, Founder and CEO of Structural Group, a recognized leader in the specialty construction industry, headquartered in Hanover, Md., “for his far-sighted and continuing leadership in the concrete repair industry, and his outstanding dedication to facilitating implementation of new research and development initiatives in the field, advancing the science and standards in concrete repair.”

The Concrete Sustainability Award is presented to individuals or teams who have actively highlighted concrete’s role in sustainable construction. Terence C. Holland, Concrete Materials Consultant living in Auburn Township, Ohio receives this award “in recognition for his clear vision to introduce and lead the initial concrete sustainability direction of the Institute.” Koji Sakai, FACI, representative of the Japan Sustainability Institute, Sapporo, Japan, receives this award “for his leadership role challenging the concrete industry to think green and for his tireless efforts to organize numerous concrete sustainability workshops and conferences globally.”

The Distinguished Achievement Award was established in 2004 by ACI’s Board of Direction to recognize non-member individuals or associations who have made notable contributions to the advancement of the concrete industry through their support of concrete utilization. The Maryland Ready Mix Concrete Association (MRMCA) receives this award, “for increasing the awareness of quality concrete construction in Maryland through leadership in the areas of promotion, advocacy, training, education, image, environmental stewardship, and technical matters.”

The ACI Young Professional Essay Contest Award, sponsored by ACI Young Professional Activities Committee (S-806), recognizes Ezgi Yurdakul, Concrete Scientist at Verifi, LLC/R.R.Grace as a young professional in the concrete- or construction-related industry who best answered the question “How do you apply sustainability principles on a daily basis in your job to improve the sustainability of concrete structures, bridges, or pavements?”

Following the awards presentation Ramon L. Carrasquillo, FACI, Founder and President of Carrasquillo Associates, delivers the next presentation for the ACI Commemorative Lecture Series. In this presentation, titled “The Millennial Culture: A Challenge to the Way we do Engineering,” Dr. Carrasquillo defines the millennial culture and explores how they learn, practice, live and enjoy engineering. He examines what it takes to educate the millennial engineers and, most importantly, how they receive, manage, and use information and resources.
