The QUIKRETE Companies, a manufacturer of packaged concrete and related products for the building and home improvement markets, has selected winners of its “Walk This Way” contest, which inspired homeowners to transform their front or backyard with a beautiful, durable concrete walkway or patio. Homeowners entered the contest from October 6 – November 2, 2014 by making a concrete walkway or patio using a QUIKRETE WalkMaker form and posting the project photos on the QUIKRETE Facebook page. The top three projects earned $1,000, $700 and $300, respectively.

  • 1st Place – Roger Young of Apex, N.C.
  • 2nd Place – Wade Mulford of Solon, Iowa
  • 3rd Place – Steven and Shannon Lougee of Hartford, Conn.

The value of the project goes beyond winning the contest according to Young. “The Walkmaker form made it easy for us to create a really unique combination patio-walkway and to work on the project at our own pace. The biggest advantage was how little prep work is required, especially when compared to the extensive surface leveling and several layers of crushed stone needed with traditional bricks or pavers. For a few hundred dollars, we were able to transform a muddy, and unappealing backyard into a clean, durable and attractive landscape that will last for years to come,” says Young.

QUIKRETE WalkMaker forms are available in four patterns including Basket Weave Brick, European Block, Running Bond Brick and Country Stone, which incidentally was the pattern used for all three of the winning projects. QUIKRETE and the Home Projects Council, a highly-regarded panel of home improvement experts, judged the entries.
