Mini skid steers are easy to operate, feature a compact size that allows them to tackle projects on the tightest jobsites and offer an extensive line of attachments that increase their versatility. This combination of performance and versatility makes the mini skid steer an ideal rental item for homeowners.

Unlike contractors who are more experienced handling construction equipment, homeowners may never have been behind the controls of anything as powerful as a mini skid steer. Their diminutive nature might make mini skid steers appear toy-like, but they should be taken seriously by operators.

"Caution should always be taken with any equipment," warns Mike Lumbers, compact utility product manager with Ditch Witch.

Instructing the customer

Operating manuals are always ideal to pass along to customers. But there are certain operating instructions and safety concerns you should go over verbally with homeowner customers before setting them loose on their projects.

"Mini skid steers are simple to operate," says Lisa McCarley with Compact Power Inc. "Most people can learn to operate them in five to 10 minutes."
